The Emotion Decoder — Social Stories for Five Common Childhood Challenges

Every behavior tells a story. Biting isn't malice — it's a communication breakdown. Drop-off tears aren't manipulation — they're a fear of disappearing. Select a challenge below to see how Social Stories rewrite the narrative.

How Social Stories work

A Social Story is a short, personalised narrative that helps a child understand and navigate a challenging situation. The method was developed by Carol Gray in the early 1990s and has strong evidence for children on the autism spectrum — but the principles work universally. The core idea: give a child a "script" for a situation before they're in it, so they have a mental model of what to expect and how to respond.

Little Narratives generates these stories on demand, personalised for each child, with watercolour illustrations and a matching EYLF-guided song. Below are five common scenarios — each with a full story and song you can preview.

Biting & Hitting

It is heartbreaking to pick up your child and hear they hurt someone today. But biting and hitting isn't malice — it's a communication breakdown. When big feelings get stuck, toddlers use their bodies. They need a new script.

Make it yours

The stories above use placeholder children — Tommy, Leo, Sarah. When you use Little Narratives, every story features your child, with their name, their interests, and a watercolour avatar that looks like them. The process is simple:

  1. Describe your child's appearance — hair colour, skin tone, eye colour. No photograph required.
  2. We generate a watercolour avatar — a charming, illustrated version of your child that appears in every story.
  3. Select the challenge — and the AI generates a story targeted at that specific social-emotional goal, mapped to EYLF outcomes.
